The Insta360 X5 is Changing the Game for Road Trips

When it comes to capturing riding footage on a road trip, the Insta360 X5 is hands down the best 360 camera I have ever used. Even though I have only been running it for a short while, the jump in video quality is immediately obvious. Compared to the X4 and all the older models I used before it, the clarity on this unit is a massive step up.

You Never Miss a Shot

The real magic of shooting in 360 is its absolute practicality. On a motorcycle, things happen fast, and you cannot be looking down at a screen or adjusting a lens angle while riding. With this setup, you just hit record, focus on the road, and capture everything around you. You literally never miss a shot. If a beautiful landscape opens up on your left, or something unexpected happens behind you, it is all safely on the memory card.

Beyond the sheer convenience, there are a few brilliant, practical features under the hood that make a massive difference when you are actually out on the tarmac:

“The Insta360 X5 changes the video game for road trips, proving the future of capturing the ride is 360. I hit record, focus on the road, and let the camera handle the rest.”

  • Proper Sensors at Last:
It sports dual 1/1.28″ sensors, which capture significantly more light and detail. That is precisely why the image clarity is such a noticeable step up in my daylight clips.
  • 8K Definition & High Frame Rates:
You get crisp 8K at 30fps for jaw-dropping scenery, but crucially for us, it does 5.7K at 60fps. That higher frame rate is exactly what you want for smoothing out high-speed action on the road.

    Decent Wind Noise Reduction:
It features an upgraded wind guard and clever audio processing. It does a fantastic job of cutting through the harsh exhaust and helmet buffet, leaving you with usable ambient sound rather than just a wall of white noise.

  • PureVideo for Low Light:
A dedicated AI chip cleans up low-light grain. If you are finishing a long stint at twilight, punching through dark tunnels, or riding into the evening, the footage stays remarkably clean.

  • Rock-Solid Stabilisation:
No matter how hard you lean into a corner, how rough the terrain gets, or how much engine vibration creeps through the bike mounts, the horizon stays dead level and the footage remains buttery smooth.
  • Swappable Lens Guards:
A massive relief for peace of mind. If a stray pebble flies off the back of a lorry, you can just swap out the tough lens guard at the roadside rather than crying over a ruined camera.
  • Better Battery & Quick Charging: The beefier battery handles long days on the bike easily, and it hits an 80% charge in about 20 minutes—ideal for a quick top-up during a petrol or coffee stop.

The Catch: Editing and Workflow

Of course, all that freedom during the ride comes with a bit of a tax when you get home. Editing 360 footage is not quite as straightforward as traditional video. When you are managing files from multiple different cameras, stitching and reframing everything can definitely feel like a bit of a chore at first.

The good news is that the software side of things is solid. Both the Insta360 mobile app and the Studio desktop app are incredibly intuitive and well-designed. That said, it does take a bit more time to truly settle into the workflow.

There is an initial learning curve to master, but once you get past it, you realise you have an incredibly practical, powerful tool that never misses a beat. For the sheer peace of mind it gives you on the road, this camera is definitely here to stay.
Get the remote control if possible. Mounted on the handlebar, magic.

If 360 is not your thing, there is always GoPro.
